Morning: The Rock of Monaco

Start at the Rock — Monaco’s historic heart, perched 85 metres above the sea. Take bus 600 from the hotel (stop right outside) and get off at Place d’Armes, then walk up or take the free lifts to the top.

• Prince’s Palace (open in season): visit the State Apartments with an audio guide . Don’t miss the Changing of the Guard at exactly 11:55 — a free ceremony unchanged for centuries.

• Monaco Cathedral: Romano-Byzantine architecture where Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III are buried. Free entry, open daily from 8:15 to 18:00.

• Oceanographic Museum: an architectural masterpiece perched 85m above the sea, founded in 1910 by Prince Albert I and directed by Commander Cousteau from 1957 to 1988. Over 6,000 marine specimens, shark lagoon, panoramic terrace. 

• Saint-Martin Gardens: a shaded, free walk along the edge of the Rock, with breathtaking views over the Mediterranean.

Afternoon: Monte-Carlo and the Port
